SPELL FOR A WEAK HEART

Final Fantasy w The Slit/The Centaurs
Tranzac Club Main Room
February 23, 2007

Toronto music fans are pretty spoiled due to the fact that there are tons of great bands always playing in our city and also because Owen plays a lot of small shows here. Prior to heading out on tour with Bloc Party, Owen headlined two shows this past weekend as part of a fundraiser for the Tranzac Club, a community centre and bar in the Annex which originated as club to promote Australian and New Zealand culture. Not sure how or why Steve Kado/Blocks Recording Company fit into the picture, but Steve spoke about the club and how they are in some sort of trouble (I think he said "fucked") before Owen's set.

Opening bands. What can I say. Didn't really enjoy either, the first had an alt-country twang, they weren't bad, it just wasn't by thing. The second band, I didn't like at all. Flute solos (nothing against flukes, Melis who came to the show with us plays it, but this was just weird)....they had drum machines and a keyboard, and a girl singing/chanting, reminded me of late 90's free-form drum 'n bass. Strange.

Final Fantasy played an incredible set consisting of new songs that I haven't heard before but immediately liked (borderline loved). Another thing that really stuck out was the newish visuals displayed behind him. They have gotten really, really good and interesting. I remember the first time I saw Owen way back in Peterborough, the visuals were pretty much stickers and simple drawings. Now they are complex drawings that almost seem animated and themed to each song (maybe it also had something to do with the cold medication mixed with beer). Owen played a couple older tracks (CN Tower Belongs To The Dead, The Lamb Sells Condos) and also a John Cale cover (not sure what the song was called). Finished with The Dream of Win and Reg (messed up the loop at first, apologized, it was endearing). Owen has gotten sooo much better live since the last time I saw him, his loops are much more intricate and advanced. Quite lovely.

Check the link for YouTube clips by letnofootletnohand, who took video of the entire performance.

According to an unofficial Owen Pallet myspace page, Final Fantasy will be playing Harbourfront Centre's annual Indie Unlimited festival on July 1, 2007.

The venue looks beautiful and from their reviews, it went really, really well. And these are some picky bloggers! Thea audience was chalk-full of celebritos (David Cross, Fab of the Strokes) and supposedly the line for same day tickets (50 in total) started at 11am!

NOTHING LASTS FOREVER, THAT'S THE WAY IT'S GOTTA BE

Arcade Fire
The Ukrainian Federation
Night #5
Montreal, Quebec

I probably should have researched where the Ukrainian Federation was prior to booking a hotel downtown Montreal. The hall was in the north part of the city in the Mile End neighbourhood, which was a $15 cab ride from our hotel. Got to the venue at 7pm, doors were suppose to be at 7pm, but didn't open until 7:40pm. The line-up was retarded long, but only took 10 minutes to get in once the doors opened. And it was FREEZING, honest to god, I don't think I've ever been that cold. My toes were numb. Once inside, we were able to score really great seats at the front of the balcony to the right of the stage, perfect sight lines and great for taking pictures. The venue was a cross between the Danforth Music Hall and St. Paul's Trinity, a bit rundown and the stage was smaller than I thought it would be. The difference between shows in Toronto and Montreal shows were apparent right away. First of all, there was no security in the venue, people were free to stand at the front of the stage (even though it was a seated venue) right away. Also, in a side room off the main hall a make shift bar was set up with cheap mixed drinks and beer. Unlike Toronto venues, people were free to drink anywhere in the venue, there wasn't a designated "legal age" section. And there was no pretension. Everyone was nice and talkative.

Arcade Fire began their set at 8:45pm to thunderous applause, the crowd seemed to be made up of fans and not industry folks like at most highly anticipated, sold out shows in Toronto. They opened with My Body Is A Cage from the forthcoming Neon Bible. Given that I've been listening to the album for about two weeks, I was familiar with the new songs but I wasn't prepared to be so blown away by the songs live. The new material shines in a live setting, and it seems that people in the audience easily connected to the songs. The band has gotten a lot better and much more cohesive as a unified group since the last time I saw them (back at the Danforth Music Hall). Win seems a lot more comfortable as a front man, he smiled a ton and engaged the audience in a way that I had never seen him do before. Regine was as cute as ever, she gives it her all and truly believes in what she's doing. The set comprised mainly of new material, with a few old songs thrown in to keep the energy up in the room (the audience response to the older tracks was crazy, it seemed that the entire audience was singing along to every song). After four new songs, they kicked into No Cars Go, a song that has been kicking around for ages (first appeared on the Us Kids Know EP and was re-recorded for Neon Bible) and a live favourite. It was utterly stunning, the crowd chanted along with the band and danced it up. I ran to the washroom during Haiti, and am glad that I did because I noticed that there was something being set up in the hall in the basement (next to the washrooms). Got back just before they launched into Black Wave/Bad Vibrations which is 200% better live than recorded. Win's half of the song really stood out. Oceans Of Noise was good, it's a bit slower and tamer than the other tracks from Neon Bible but still managed to hold the audience's attention. The final three songs of the main set were brilliant, Power Out and Rebellion (Lies) caused a mini riot at the edge of the stage, the fans were dancing their hearts out (sorry for the cheesiness). Set closer Intervention was stunning, it's the song that I think is going to break the band in the mainstream (I'd be really surprised if they weren't playing arenas by the end of the Neon Bible tour).
The band left the stage for 5 minutes and returned for their encore with another Funeral favourite, Neighbourhood #1 (Tunnels). After they finished the song, the band left the stage, instruments in hand and began walking down the side of the venue to the stairs to the basement. We followed quickly to the basement hall, people on the balcony and towards the back of the main floor saw what was happening and also made their way down. Security counted the bodies flowing by them on the stairs and ended up stopping the hordes of people. We got into the hall and found a great spot to the left of the stage. The hall had been decorated with X-mas decoratons, tea lights and candles. On stage, a small girl of 8 or 9 years old (who oddly enough was sitting next to us on the balcony) did a short reading (in French, I have no idea what she was saying) with the band standing around her. Once she was done, the band launched into an acoustic version of The Well And The Lighthouse (my favourite song on Neon Bible), with Win standing in front of the stage singing through a megaphone on a mic stand. It was really really great, it felt like we were witnessing something really special. I took video of the entire song and will be posting it online tomorrow (once back in Toronto, I need to use the PC). Sooo freakin' beautiful. Following the secret basement encore, Win, Regine and a couple others made their way up through the throngs of fans back to the main hall for a third encore consisting of an acoustic version of Wake Up. Fans in the basement were not allowed back to the main hall and were ushered out a side door. Final thoughts...an amazing night, I don't think I'll ever have the chance to see this band in this type of environment again. With the release of Neon Bible, I really feel that their popularity will soar, bringing with it larger venues and a broader fan base. The trip to Montreal was well worth it, and I really do feel very lucky to have been able to attend.

GREETINGS FROM MONTREAL

Arrived in Montreal yesterday afternoon. Flew Porter from the Toronto Island Airport, and I must say that it was one of the most enjoyable airline related experiences I have ever had. The lounge at the airport is amazing, very boutique style, they have comfy chairs and couches to wait in and have a complimentary Starbucks-like coffee bar (all the freakin' Americanos you can drink!) and wireless internet access. The plane was smaller than I anticipated, but totally decked out with leather seats, a nice amount of leg room and a copy of their in-flight magazine that is published by Wallpaper Magazine. Even though the flight is only an hour and ten minutes, they still serve a small meal (sandwich, cheese, breadsticks and a cookie) along with a drink our your choice (juices, red or white wine, imported beer). All of this and the flight was $25 more than taking the train! Today off to Musee Des Beaux-Arts De Montreal, maybe a bit of shopping and then tonight, Arcade Fire at the Ukrainian Federation. Full post about the show tonight or tomorrow morning (I working off PAID hotel internet, I was really surprised to find out that they didn't have free high-speed in the rooms. Damn you Sheraton! Ps. I had intended to include pictures from the flight and stuff but for some reason my iBook won't allow me to transfer stuff off my camera. Pics to follow once I straighten shizz out.

THE WEEK IN REVIEW

Had a super busy week, tons going on, and I haven't really had any downtime to post about what went on. So here we go:

M.Ward
01/27/2007
Mod Club

I've heard a ton about how amazing M.Ward's solo sets are, so I was pretty friggin' excited about this show. And....it was a let down. First of all, when did he get so incredibly popular? It felt like I was at a Dave Matthews or John Mayer concert, the crowd was a really strange mix of frat boy jocks, oldies and hipsters. He played a selection of songs spanning all his albums, but nothing really stuck out. Poison Cup was pretty good though.

Okay, please don't judge. I have a dirty secret to admit. I heart Justin Timberlake. Yup, there it is. I really liked Justified, and FutureSexx/LoveSounds. My work owns a box at the ACC and I was offered a ticket to the show.

Justin Timberlake/Pink
January 30, 2007
Air Canada Centre

Had dinner with friends from work and then headed down to the ACC. The private boxes are great, private bar with cheaper alcohol prices ($5 a beer instead of $8.75 in the arena), and comfortable seating for 18 people. Pink opened the show, I can respect her "pop" career but don't really enjoy her music. Felt kinda bad for her, she played to a half full venue...in a club its not as noticeable, in a place as huge as the ACC, all you could see is empty seats. She did some interesting things with velvet curtains, climbed them, wrapped them around her, and had mock sex with a back up dancer while suspended over the stage (30 feet up!!!).
J.T. hit the stage and opened with FutureSexx/LoveSounds, then did a string of hits....My Love, Like I Love You and Senorita. After this, I was ready to go home. It's been said a thousand times, Justin is an amazing performer, he's captivating and can hold the audience's attention. And speaking of the audience, I would have thought it would be mostly females, but there was a a ton of guys in the audience. There was a 25 minute intermission when Timbaland took over the show and did a pretty wicked DJ set of a bunch of stuff he has produced (Nelly Furtado, Alliyah, Missy Elliott etc.) and tons of other great party tracks (Michael Jackson, Since You've Been Gone). I have to admit, I have a soft spot in my heart for hip hop/R&B with good production. J.T.'s second half of the show was kinda boring...it was all his R&B-lite crud. I enjoyed Cry Me A River and the finale Sexyback. The show wasn't just a concert, it was a total spectacle. Justin as much as he's written off as a boy band has-been, is actually turned into a great artist that can put on a captivating show that can even draw in the snobbiest indie rock listener.

Ps. Pre-show music included The Rapture, Le Tigre and Clipse, I was in indie-rock pop heaven!

Also attended the Owen Pallett/Steve Kado talk at Harbourfront Centre. Got a flat tire on the way down. CAA put on my spare and I was still able to catch the tail end of the talk. Steve's a pretty funny guy, and Owen was great as usual. It was interesting to hear about the origins of Blocks Recording Co. An fun night.
